The 31st Pioneer Black Journalist Awards was held at the Georgia Freight Depot on July 21 2013 and it was a GRAND affair! I had a chance to capture a few moments before heading out for my family vacation. My hubby gave me a deadline to be in the car (not leaving the venue) so I dined, photographed and dashed off! Take a look at some of my highlights 🙂
The FABULOUS T.J. Holmes served as Master of Ceremonies and the evening began with a warm greeting from Tenisha Bell, AABJ President and Mayor Kasim Reed.
Awards recipients included:
Ernie Suggs, AJC – 2013 Pioneer Black Journalist
Frank Ski – Presidential Tribute
Brittany Geneva Cummings, CNN – Volunteer of the Year
The Pioneer Black Journalist Awards, the signature event of the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists, was implemented more than 30 years ago to recognize the most creative, innovative and brightest professionals in the African American journalism community.
The awards program honors those professionals in new media, print, public relations, radio and television who have honed their journalistic skills into riveting, interesting and compelling stories. AABJ also presents its highest honors: Pioneer Black Journalist and Volunteer of the Year. Representatives from every major media outlet and discipline in Atlanta attend the event.
Proceeds benefit the Xernona Clayton Scholarship Fund. Every year, AABJ awards $10,000 in scholarships to deserving journalism students.
Special thanks to Ronnie for the invite! Enjoy the pics!
