Sometimes, I have to pinch myself… Last night, I spent another moment in history at HBO’s Atlanta premiere screening of “All The Way” with Actor Anthony Mackie, Director Jay Roach and Screenwriter Robert Schenkkan. The event was held at The Carter Center and once again I was able to see a historical film in the same room with greatness… including Ambassador Andrew Young and Atlanta’s own songstress Kathleen Bertrand!
Set your DVR’s NOW to Saturday 21st for this behind the scenes look at President Lyndon B. Johnson’s (played by Emmy & Tony Award-winner Bryan Cranston) first year in office. SO many historical moments happened during this time and is briiliantly portrayed in the film starting with JFK’s assassination, the civil rights movement with Dr. Martin Luther King (Anthony Mackie) and LBJ’s re-election.
Johnson finds himself caught between the moral imperative of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the expectations of the southern Democratic Party leaders who brought Johnson to power. As King battles to press Johnson while controlling more radical elements of the Civil Rights movement, Johnson navigates the bill through Congress, winning a landslide victory against Barry Goldwater, but causing the South to defect from the Democratic Party.
On this rare occasion… I was able to sit and enjoy the film. From beginning to end I was captivated by the depth of human emotions, fears and thoughts. The film doesn’t lend it’s “total” focus on retelling the story of events that took place… but gives us an inside glimpse of the mindset of these powerful individuals behind it all. On a lighter note… LBJ was a very funny old man. LOL! So many hilarious moments with his witty one liners and practical jokes.

Yours Truly was able to chat with the one & only Anthony Mackie who portrays MLK in the film and kills it! I asked him to share how he prepared for this pivotal role and to my surprise… he pointed most of his gratitude to time spent in ATLANTA! Take a look at my little clip but FIRST let me say… y’all I promise to do better with my video’s. Like a big kid… I’ve been trying to avoid wearing my prescription glasses and it’s really starting to catch up with me 🙁
In this clip… Anthony is on the panel with Jay Roach, Robert Schenkkan and moderator Meredith R Evans (The Carter Center) as he shares the difference in this MLK role vs. his other movie roles:
In this LAST clip… screenwriter Robert Schenkkan shares the “takeaways” from the voices in the film for the audience:
