My twin sister has ALWAYS been fascinated with how to do a “smokey eye”. She’s a wonderful mom with teen girls and spends most of her time knitting and creating hand-made accessories for local boutiques. Not much need for a lot of make up but every now and then an opportunity knocks with an outing… and she fails at EVERY attempt. LOL!
I found this article on Celebrity Makeup Artist Pati Dubroff from Spa Sydell. This one’s for you SIS and other aspiring smokey eye experts!
This pic shows the crème de la crème (strong eye) of smokey eyes, created by Pati and worn by Charlize Theron at the world premiere of Snow White and the Huntsman.

Pati – “I used a grey pencil to create the elongated shape, followed by a deep grey shadow to top the base…then, black shadow and liner to intensify the corners. The center of lid was left almost empty; some nude and silvery shimmer is all I added. This keeps the eye open, and prevents it from looking too heavy.”
“The big thing is to keep an open space in the center of the lid, It keeps the smoky eye from looking too dark and heavy. I also usually stay away from only using black; I add only a small amount of black for extra depth.”
Pati – “Using the first product as a guide: “I like to smudge with a pencil or cream liner base first to get shape, and then add matte shadow to create contour and depth.” And if you want to liven up your makeup with some color? It should go either “on the center of the lid or in the inner corner.”
Here’s a list of Dubroff’s list of product recommendations!
