What a treat! Yesterday, I attended a wonderful play by Trey Anthony, called “Da Kink in My Hair”, which debuted at the Toronto Fringe Festival in 2001 and is also the winner of 4 NAACP Theater awards! The Atlanta production of the play featured soul singer Angie Stone, Grammy Award-winning singer Melanie Fiona and actress Terri J Vaughn from The Steve Harvey Show.
Set in a Caribbean hair salon in Toronto, ‘da Kink in my Hair gives voice to eight black women who tell their unforgettable stories in a kaleidoscope of drumming, singing and dance. It is a testament to the challenges and triumphs in the lives of contemporary black women, many of whom are immigrants to North America from the Caribbean. Mixing laughter and tears, revelation and inspiration, the unapologetically intense stories of each woman are woven together in this powerful piece.
Oh my goodness, the “salon scene” was SO funny and real. Novelette, the Caribbean Canadian told it like it was and gave us some real “hair salon” scenarios we could ALL relate too. I wasn’t expecting such a FULL production … I mean this was a powerful masterpiece filled with dance, music and food for the soul.
Check out some of the pics I snapped at the red carpet which included Kandi Burress (RHOA), Sharlinda Parker and Sabrina Rowe (Big Rich Atlanta), Q Parker and Towanda Braxton! Story of my life again… I didn’t get a chance to stay for the entire show and meet the ladies (Melanie, Terry and Angie) of the hour. They walked the carpet after the show but here’s a BIG congrats to Trey Anthony and the entire cast on a wonderful play!
Sending a VERY SPECIAL thanks to AW Media Group for letting me participate!
This is a MUST SEE!!! “Da Kink in My Hair” will also run today and tomorrow at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center! Get your tickets HERE.
