Atlanta will never be the same after Jay-Z’s Magna Carter World Tour at the Philips Arena last night! YOURS TRULY was in the house to capture all the excitement. I want to start off by giving a BIG shout out to RollingOut Magazine for the assignment 🙂
This was my FIRST shoot at the big arena and of course I was a little nervous… but excited. As I stood inside the backstage loading dock, I watched MANY supporters come through including Lil Bow Wow, Ceelo Green, and 2 Chainz. Boy, I wanted to pull out my camera like a pistol but dared not… such an act is ground for dismissal. I heard the Queen BEYONCE was in the arena supporting her “King of Rap”!
Another highlight: To my pure delight… there were only 3 approved photographers in the pit and I was ONE of them. 🙂
There were no bells & whistles and no grand announcement. Jay-Z, the music mogul from Brooklyn, simply stepped out on the stage and the SOLD-OUT arena went bananas. LOL!
The photographers are only allowed to stay for 3 songs but I was able to take a small pause to experience the movement as Jay-Z threw up his triangle hand sign. From my little research on his Magna Carter World Tour I learned he keeps this theme throughout the performance. No fancy props… just him, his voice, music and partner Timbaland behind the keyboard.
“I’ve been looking forward to this date since they announced the tour. We’ve been in L.A., we’ve been in Houston, but Atlanta is one of those special dates tonight,” Jay Z said at the start of the 110-minute show, and for once, an obligatory fill-in-your-city-here comment sounded genuine.
True Story: I was at one side of the pit while the other photogs & videographers were at the other end (I tend to do that quite often)… To my benefit, Jay-Z ZONED in on me!! I was the only one in the zone and caught the touchdown pass!! Not my best pic but he looked in MY lens 🙂
Jay-Z performed some of his hits including “Big Pimpin’”, “U Don’t Know,” “On to the Next One,” “Picasso Baby,” “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”, “I Just Wanna Love U (Give it 2 Me),” “Encore,” and “Empire State of Mind”.
Here’s to one of the best nights of my career! 2014 Lets GO!!!
