Lisa Collins’ 20th Annual First Ladies High Tea is always a classy affair! Gospel legend CeCe Winans was surprised when her niece Deborah Joy Winans, starring in OWN’s Greenleaf delivered a touching introduction and presented her with the Spirit Award at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
“’The First Ladies High Tea’ was conceived in 1997 to celebrate and embrace the role first ladies and women in the church play in providing services to the community and shaping the lives of young girls and youth,” explains Publisher Lisa Collins. “So often the work that they do goes overlooked and we wanted to change that and provide a forum to recognize them for all that they do and all that they are to us.”
Five high school girls were chosen to receive $1000 scholarships and the winners were announced at the tea. This year’s essay theme, “Stand Up, Stand Out (Why fit in when God created you to stand out)”.
Congresswoman Karen Bass, popular actress Wendy Raquel Robinson, Dr. Yutaka Niihara, Inventor of breakthrough Sickle Cell Treatment and First Ladies; Regina Taylor (Park Windsor Baptist Church), Morgen Wilbourne, (Pacific Crossroads Church), Patricia Swancy (Peace Apostolic Church) and Cynthia Buelna (Restauracion Total Church) were also honored in grand style.
