Yesterday, I was truly inspired as I spent time with the most AMAZING McBride family of Design Essentials who’s celebrating their 25th Anniversary by hosting a series of events during the 2015 Bronner Bros Hair Show weekend. DE kicked off the festivities by hosting a fabulous media brunch at Asante’s in downtown Atlanta!
Design Essentials has certainly stood the test of time as they mark this momentous accomplishment, remaining as one of the few African American, family-owned beauty manufacturers in the industry.
“This is a fast-changing industry, so to be able to accomplish 25 years as one of the top manufacturers that is continuing from strength to strength is definitely something to shout about” says Taydra Mitchell-Jackson, VP of Marketing for Design Essentials. “We’re looking forward to reconnecting with our old friends and new partners to not only reflect on where we’ve been but also what’s on the horizon.”
This exclusive brunch included meals from a specially designed menu and awesome gift bags filled with DE hair products. And top it all off… we were also gifted with a “hot off the Press” 25th Anniversary look book with images captured by photographer Allen Cooley.
Guest enjoyed a wonderful discussion hosted by Deena Campbell, Hair and Beauty Editor of Essence.com featuring McBride Research Laboratories founder Cornell McBride Sr., his sons Cornell McBride Jr (President) & Andre McBride, Sr. (Director of Human Resources) and Sholanda McBride Armstrong (Director of Website Development). Mr. McBride Sr. spoke confidently as he discussed putting forth his last leg for his children to carry on the “living legacy”. “My motivation always comes from not what I’ve done… but what can be done”, said McBride.
He talked about his M&M Products Company co- founded in 1973 with best friend Therman McKenzie which became internationally known and generated over 400 million dollars in revenue. The partners ended up going into different directions and sold the company to Johnson Products. This taught Mr. McBride to instill in his children a very important lesson… “The BEST idea, not MY idea yields greatness in this family business. No ego’s”.
Mr. McBride Sr. attributes his success to providing good products for different types of hair texture, not race. He believes having a strong financial discipline and a look into the future guarantees longevity in this business. He is a living testimony 🙂
Sending a special thanks to the Brainchild Associates team for the invite.
